Everything you need to know about the evolution of the Vitality HealthyFood benefit
- 1. The enhanced Vitality HealthyFood benefit from 1 September
When you're shopping for qualifying HealthyFood items at Checkers or Woolworths, make sure to use your relevant Checkers Xtra Savings card or Woolworths WRewards card at the till or online to receive up to 25% back on your HealthyFood purchases.
You can purchase qualifying HealthyFood items on Checkers Sixty60, Woolworths Online, Woolies app and Woolies Dash through your online profile. Please make sure that your Checkers Xtra Savings card and Woolworths WRewards card are added to your profile before shopping to receive up to 25% back on your HealthyFood purchases.
Discovery Bank clients can pay with their Discovery Bank credit card to boost their rewards to up to 75% back, based on the qualifying Discovery Bank product, Vitality Money status, and qualifying monthly credit card spend. You'll receive your rewards for your current month's purchases in the first two weeks of the following month, paid into your Ðiscovery Miles Account as Ðiscovery Miles.
- You can WhatsApp Checkers at 087 240 5385 with "Checkers Xtra Savings card number" to receive an image of your linked card number;
- Visit www.checkers.co.za and login with your cellphone number or email address; or
- Open the Checkers Sixty60 app to view your Checkers Xtra Savings card number in your profile under "Account Details".
- Contact Woolworths on 0861 502 050 to request your WRewards card number to be sent via SMS;
- Visit www.woolworths.co.za to view your WRewards card number by logging in and selecting your name at the top of the page to access your profile; or
- Open the Woolworths app to view your WRewards card number by selecting "My Accounts" and then "My Details."
Your HealthyFood rewards are paid in Ðiscovery Miles from 1 September, our rewards currency that is more valuable than cash. You'll receive 10 Ðiscovery Miles for every R1 earned.
Vitality members get more value by earning and spending Ðiscovery Miles, our rewards currency that's more valuable than cash. As a result, we receive many requests to create more Miles-earning opportunities.
Here are some things members are enjoying spending their Ðiscovery Miles on:
- A regular sized coffee for 200 Ðiscovery Miles (equivalent to R20 but worth up to R40)
- A smoothie for 300 Ðiscovery Miles (equivalent to R30 but worth up to R75)
- A small or regular popcorn from Ster-Kinekor for 250 Ðiscovery Miles (equivalent to R25 but worth up to R50)
- A Nando's side for 350 Ðiscovery Miles (equivalent to R35 but worth up to R47)
- An Exclusive Books voucher for as little as 2,125 Ðiscovery Miles, depending on what Discovery products you have (equivalent to R212.50 but worth R250)
If you have a qualifying Discovery Bank product - including the Ðiscovery account with zero monthly fees - you are able to spend them directly at a wide range of partner stores, both online and in-store, purchase value added services, such as airtime or electricity and spend them on Vitality Travel on your next discounted trip. This flexibility ensures you can make the most of your Ðiscovery Miles, whether you prefer to use them for shopping, travel, or saving. You can also choose to cash out your Discovery Miles.

There may be a slight delay on your first payment while we migrate you onto Ðiscovery Miles, but rest assured you'll have them before Black Friday.
Previously, Vitality HealthyFood members got up to 25% back on R2,000 spent on HealthyFood as a single Vitality member and 25% back on the first R4,000 as a family. We've increased that to R2,500 for single members and R5,000 for families.
Now, each adult on the policy with an active HealthyFood benefit contributes to the overall monthly cap. For example, if the principal member spends R3,000 at their HealthyFood partner on the 1st of the month, and the spouse spends R2,000 on the 13th of the month, reaching the monthly cap, any additional purchases made in the month by any other qualifying member will not contribute to rewards as the monthly limit would have already been reached. Rewards are calculated individually, so members on the same policy may have different reward levels. Purchases are processed beginning with all the principal member's transactions, followed by the spouse, adult dependents, and then child dependents over 18 years old. Purchases per member role are prioritised in this order: primary in-store partner, primary online partner, secondary in-store partner, and secondary online partner.
You can now earn more HealthyFood rewards by having the choice of a different online and in-store primary partner at which you will earn up to 25% back in Vitality Health rewards on qualifying HealthyFood purchases.
You are able to select a different primary partner for your online (Checkers Sixty60 and Woolworths online, Woolies app and Woolies Dash) and in-store purchases (Checkers and Woolworths Food). Make sure to have your Checkers Xtra Savings and Woolworths WRewards cards activated and linked to your HealthyFood profile.
Starting 1 September 2024, all adults on a qualifying Vitality membership can activate the enhanced HealthyFood benefit and choose the primary partners. All adults on the same membership will share the same primary partners. Once chosen, only the main member can change the primary partners once every rolling 12 months. These rules apply separately to online and in-store changes. The initial choice does not count towards this restriction, allowing one additional change. The main member must check their profile and if they wish, change the primary partners selected for their membership.
From 1 January 2025, all restrictions related to changing primary partners will be reset, allowing the main member to change primary partners again.
You earn rewards when buying qualifying HealthyFood items from your primary in-store and online partner. This reward is be calculated as follows:
- 10% upon activation of the HealthyFood benefit through Vitality Health at your primary partners.
- Increased to 25% at your primary partners and 10% back at your secondary partners by finding out your Vitality Age and doing a Vitality Health Check.
- Boosted up to 75% as a Discovery Bank client, depending on your Discovery Bank product, as well as Vitality Money status and qualifying monthly credit card spend:

As Discovery Bank client with a qualifying Discovery Bank product with Vitality Money, you earn up to 50% on HealthyFood rewards based on your engagement with the Vitality Money programme and qualifying monthly spend on your Discovery Bank credit card.
You earn Vitality Health rewards when buying qualifying HealthyFood items from your primary in-store and online partner. Vitality Active members' no longer have secondary partners within the HealthyFood benefit. The benefit cap is R1,250 for single members and R2,500 for families, with rewards increased from up to 20% back to up to 25% back at your primary partners. Rewards are calculated based on the first R1,250 of your spend on HealthyFood items as a single Vitality member or on R2,500 of your spend on HealthyFood items as a family.
Each adult with an active HealthyFood benefit on the policy contributes to the overall monthly cap. Reward levels are determined individually, meaning members on the same policy may have different reward levels. Purchases are processed, beginning with all the principal member's transactions, and followed by the spouse, adult dependants, and child dependants over the age of 18 years old. Purchases per member role are prioritised in this order: primary in-store partner and primary online partner.
For example, if the principal member spends R1,500 at their HealthyFood partner on the 1st of the month either online or in-store, and the spouse spends R1,000 on the 13th of the month either online or in-store, reaching the monthly cap, any additional purchases made in the month by any other qualifying member will not contribute to rewards as the monthly limit would have already been reached.

The new HealthyFood benefit was designed to help you maximise your rewards at our partners. If you are not comfortable with the way the benefit operates, or to manage your information sharing setting with our partners, please contact us to deactivate your HealthyFood benefit.
- 2. Vitality HealthyFood partners
Checkers has been added as a Vitality HealthyFood partner to make the benefit more accessible to more members and to cater for members who have different preferences for their primary grocer, based on a variety of factors. A large proportion of Vitality members currently shop at Checkers or use Checkers Sixty60 for grocery delivery. This does not prevent you from switching to a HealthyFood partner of your choice.
At the moment, the HealthyFood benefit is available at Checkers only. Vitality does review its benefits on a continual basis and will adjust the offering based on member needs. Should the partnership be extended, we'll communicate this to all members.
If your ID number is linked to your Checkers Xtra Savings card, you'll automatically start earning rewards when you activate the HealthyFood benefit. Make sure that your South African ID or passport number is updated on the Checkers Xtra Savings platform either online or in-store. Activate your HealthyFood benefit on the Discovery website, and as long as your ID number is the same on Checkers and Discovery, your Xtra Savings card will be linked on the system.
- For WhatsApp, add Checkers on (087 240 5385) as a contact and say "Hi" to initiate the sign-up process.
- For Website visit https://www.checkers.co.za/registration to sign up.
- For USSD, dial *134*885*CARDNUMBER# to sign up.
- Call the Xtra Savings Contact Centre on 0800 33 33 85
- Visit your nearest Checkers store to get a new Checkers Xtra Savings card.
- Order a Checkers Xtra Savings card via the Checkers Sixty60 app.
To link your Checkers Xtra Savings card, make sure your ID number is linked to the new card and start shopping right away. If your HealthyFood benefit has been activated and your ID number is the same on your Discovery and Checkers profiles, you'll earn rewards for your qualifying HealthyFood purchases.
Xtra Savings Plus is accessed via the Sixty60 App and a customer needs to link their existing Xtra Savings Card via the Sixty60 App to their profile. Please note that Xtra Savings Plus is a subscription offering on the Sixty60 App with its own benefits. Extra Savings Plus should not have an impact on the Vitality HealthyFood rewards as this is a separate subscription offering on Sixty60.
You can find your Checkers Xtra Savings card number on the Checkers Sixty60 app. Simply tap on Profile, then select Account details at the top to view your card number.
If you have already activated the HealthyFood benefit through the Vitality Health programme, and you are using a previously linked card (Woolworths MySchool, MyVillage or MyPlanet cards) for your rewards at Woolworths, you may continue using the card until it is lost, misplaced, damaged or expired. You will need to get a new Woolworths WRewards card thereafter.
You can find your Woolworths Rewards card number on the Woolies app. Tap on My accounts, then My profile and select My details to view your card number.
The HealthyFood benefit is only available at the following partner store types: Woolworths in store, Woolworths online, Woolies app and Woolies Dash. WCellar and Woolworths Foodstop stores at Engen garages as well as any stores not mentioned above are excluded from the HealthyFood benefit.
- 3. General Vitality HealthyFood FAQs
If you or any adult member on your Vitality policy has difficulty registering or logging into your or their Discovery profile on the Discovery app or website (www.discovery.co.za), please call us on 0860 99 88 77 and select option 2.
If your HealthyFood benefit is active and linked to your profile, please note that rewards won't be earned in-store without using your card. If you don't have your card, you'll need to get it replaced. For online or in-app shopping, as long as your card is linked, you'll continue to earn rewards. When using your virtual card, it will automatically be recognised. So, feel free to use your virtual card or get a replacement if needed.
If you have lost your Xtra Savings card, you can easily replace it by getting a new one in-store or ordering one through the Sixty60 app. To update your profile, you can do so in-store, via WhatsApp, on the Checkers website by creating a profile and logging in, or by contacting the Xtra Savings Support Centre.
To replace your lost WRewards card, you can use your virtual card on the Woolies App or get a new card in-store and link it to your profile at www.wrewards.co.za or https://www.woolworths.co.za/dashboard/rewards/add-wrewards-card. To unlink your lost card, call the WRewards call centre on 0861 502 050 to prevent others from affecting your HealthyFood rewards.
Please check the HealthyFood catalogues for Checkers and Woolworths to make sure that the item you're about to purchase qualifies for HealthyFood rewards. If you believe that the item you've purchased is a qualifying HealthyFood item, you can contact Vitality for further assistance. You are in control of suggesting a replacement item when placing your order or to decline choosing alternative options should your item be out of stock.
Changes to your primary partners will be effective from the start of the following month. For example, if you change your primary in-store HealthyFood partner on 4 September from Woolworths to Checkers, you'll earn your maximum rewards for the month of September at Woolworths. Starting 1 October, you will earn your maximum rewards from Checkers. Also, if both your Vitality Age and Vitality Health Checks are valid, you will continue to receive 10% back at your other partners, until the change becomes effective.
All adults on the same membership will share the same preferred partners. Only the main member can change them, but only once every rolling 12 months. Changing your online or in-store preferred partner is handled separately.
Example: Lesedi is the main member and her son Banele is an adult dependant on the membership. On 13 January 2025 Banele activates the HealthyFood benefit and chooses Woolworths in store as the preferred in-store partner and Woolworths online, Woolies app and Woolies Dash as the preferred online partner. On 20 January 2025 Lesedi changes only the preferred online partner to Checkers Sixty60. After this, she cannot change the online partner again until 20 January 2026, but she can still change the preferred in-store partner at any time.
Complete your Vitality Age and book your Vitality Health Check online. Where applicable book your Vitality Health Check for 65+. If you can't get to an accredited clinic, you can book your Vitality Health Check at home.
You earn 20 Vitality points for each HealthyFood item bought at Checkers and Woolworths. We will deduct 20 points for each unhealthy item purchased, but you cannot earn negative points; the minimum is zero. You can earn up to 1,000 points per month from HealthyFood purchases, with a maximum of 12,000 points per year.
When rewards for other benefits are not being paid in Ðiscovery Miles or partner loyalty points, they will be paid into your Vitality policy's reward account. When activating these benefits, we have opened up the ability to all adults on the membership to capture a reward account when one has not been captured. It's the main member's responsibility to check that the correct reward account has been captured.
- 4. The Vitality HealthyFood benefit prior 1 September 2024
The Vitality programme is constantly evolving to ensure that we continue to drive healthy engagement for our members.
The HealthyFood benefit ended at Pick n Pay stores and on-demand platforms on 31 August 2024. Pick n Pay has been a longstanding Vitality partner, and we will continue to collaborate in many ways, including the continuation of members spending their Ðiscovery Miles at Pick n pay and through the Vitality Mall.
Rewards on qualifying purchases made until the end of the day on 31 August 2024 would qualify. These rewards will be paid by 15 September 2024. Transactions made on 1 September 2024 onwards at Pick n Pay do not qualify for HealthyFood rewards.
As a Vitality member, you can choose to redeem a Pick n Pay voucher in the Vitality Mall.
And if you have the Discovery Bank app, you can spend Ðiscovery Miles in-store at your personalised discount, depending what Discovery products you have. Plus, still enjoy Miles Ð-Day.
