Spotlight on... pulses

Let's celebrate this tiny but mighty ingredient on World Pulses Day on 10 February 2025. This year's theme is 'love pulses for a healthy diet and planet' and we're all for it.

Pulses are the dried edible seeds of legume plants, for example beans (kidney, black, pinto), lentils, peas and chickpeas. Legumes refer to the entire plant, including the pod, stems and leaves.

Why pick pulses?

Pulses are nutritional powerhouses for a healthy body and mind. They're a rich source of essential nutrients, including protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Plus, they're low in fat and sodium and contain no cholesterol.

Why do we love pulses?

Eating pulses at least 3 times a week can help reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, colon cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Plus, it's easy to make!

3 easy ways to eat more pulses

  1. Start small: Add lentils to soups or salads, use chickpeas in your favourite curry or use hummus as a low-calorie veggie dip.
  2. Play with your food: Don't be scared to try new recipes! From hummus and falafel to bean stews and lentil burgers, the possibilities are endless.
  3. Share the love: Share your pulse-based meals on social media and encourage others to join the movement.

Stand a chance to win a R2,000 grocery voucher
